Gifts That Survive a Cambodian Wet Season
Between May and October, Phnom Penh sits above 80% humidity for weeks at a time. That is wonderful for mangoes and catastrophic for cut flowers.

What humidity actually does to a bouquet
Fresh flowers do not simply dry out here — they rot. High humidity slows evaporation, so stems stay wet, bacteria multiply in the vase, and petals go translucent and brown at the edges before they ever get a chance to wilt properly. In wet season a supermarket bouquet is often finished in 48 hours.
Air conditioning makes it worse in a different way. Moving between a cold office and a hot street repeatedly stresses the petals, and condensation forms on the coolest surfaces, which is usually the flowers themselves.
What holds up
Chenille stems have a wire core wrapped in fibre. There is no water in them to go stagnant and nothing biological to break down, so humidity does almost nothing. They do not swell, warp, or discolour, and they are not interesting to insects — which matters more than people expect during the rains.
Framed pieces do particularly well because the mica front panel keeps dust and damp off the blooms entirely. If you are buying for somewhere without air conditioning, a frame is the safest thing we make.
Caring for them here
- Keep them out of direct sun — strong afternoon light will fade any dyed fibre over a period of years, ours included.
- Do not hang them directly under an air-conditioning vent; constant airflow collects dust into the petals faster.
- Dust with a soft make-up brush or a hairdryer on its coolest setting.
- If a bloom gets crushed in a bag, bend it back — the wire core is why that works.
- Never wash them. There is no situation where water helps.
Sending to the provinces in wet season
This is where everlasting flowers genuinely change what is possible. A fresh bouquet cannot survive a bus to Battambang in July. Ours travel boxed, arrive in the same condition they left, and we remake anything damaged in transit free if you send a photo within 48 hours.
