How to Choose a Gift Colour (When You Are Not Sure)

What each colour tends to say

• Lavender and lilac — thoughtful, calm, a little unusual. Reads as considered rather than romantic, which makes it the most versatile colour we make.
• Pink and blush — warmth and affection without declaring anything. Safe for friends, colleagues, mothers and new relationships alike.
• Red and ruby — unambiguous. Give it when you mean it; avoid it when you do not, because the message arrives whether you intended it or not.
• Gold and yellow — friendship, congratulations, cheerfulness. The right colour for graduations, new jobs and get-well gifts.
• Cream and neutral — elegant and quiet. Suits someone whose home you have seen and whose taste is restrained.

Match the room, not just the person

A gift that lasts forever has to live somewhere. If you have been to their home and it is all warm wood and white walls, cream or lavender will sit comfortably. If their style is bolder, ruby or gold will not look out of place. This matters far more for an everlasting piece than a fresh bouquet that disappears in a week.

The safe answer

If you genuinely do not know: lavender, or a soft mixed palette. Neither declares anything you might not mean, both suit almost any room, and neither looks like you defaulted.
