Anniversary Flowers by Year

The anniversary flower list is less well known than the material one — no one forgets paper, silver and gold — but it is far more giftable.

Anniversary Flowers by Year — handmade everlasting flowers by LEAP

The milestones

  • 1st — Carnation. Young love, and a flower that suits being given in any colour.
  • 2nd — Lily of the Valley. Sweetness and renewed happiness.
  • 3rd — Sunflower. Loyalty and warmth, and a good year to give something cheerful rather than romantic.
  • 5th — Daisy. Loyal love. Often given as a mixed arrangement rather than singly.
  • 10th — Daffodil. A decade in, and a flower that means new beginnings — which is a nicer sentiment than it first appears.
  • 15th — Rose. The obvious one, saved for a milestone that earns it.
  • 20th — Aster. Wisdom and patience.
  • 25th — Iris. Faith and hope, for the silver year.
  • 50th — Yellow rose and violet. Given together, for the golden anniversary.

Give the flower, keep the year

The appeal of an everlasting version is straightforward: give the first anniversary carnation and it is still there for the tenth. Couples who do this end up with a shelf that reads as a record rather than a series of replacements.

A framed piece works particularly well for this, because it can carry both names and the date. Ours take three to four days to make.

If you would rather not follow the list

Most people do not, and that is fine. Red for the years that felt big, blush for the quiet ones, and something in her favourite colour for the years when you would rather be accurate than traditional.
